Israel escalate attacks on displacement tents in Gaza City

Israel launched another night of deadly bombardment on Gaza City on Thursday, with strikes targeting tents sheltering internally displaced Palestinians, killing several children and wounding others.

As of 15:30 local time (12:30 GMT), at least 50 Palestinians had been killed, according to health officials.

One of the strikes hit a makeshift camp in the al-Nasr neighbourhood, west of Gaza City, setting several tents ablaze.

It is the latest in a wave of escalating attacks on camps housing displaced Palestinians in Gaza City, which has come under intensified Israeli bombardment in recent days amid reported plans to occupy the city and forcibly displace its Palestinian population.

Recent assaults have included armed quadcopters dropping incendiary bombs on makeshift shelters late at night, sparking fires and widespread panic.

According to Dr Muneer Alboursh, director general of the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza, at least 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and 6,000 wounded in Gaza City over the past 20 days since the intensified bombing campaign began.

Alboursh accused Israel of “deceiving” the media by claiming it has yet to launch a full-scale assault on Gaza City, while in reality, tens of thousands have already been forcibly expelled and hundreds of residential buildings flattened in areas including Jabalia, al-Nazla, Sheikh Radwan, al-Zaytoun, and al-Sabra.

He also said the only medical centre serving the area has been burned down by Israeli forces.

The growing attacks come as nearly one million Palestinians in Gaza City continue to suffer under an Israeli-imposed famine.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, three more deaths caused by malnutrition were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of famine-related deaths to 370, including 131 children.

The overall death toll since Israel began its genocide in October 2023 has now surpassed 64,000, with more than 161,000 wounded. 

Israel confirms truce offer rejection 

Elsewhere, Hamas released a statement late on Wednesday reaffirming its acceptance of a ceasefire proposal presented on 18 August, which was nearly identical to terms previously demanded by Israel.

The group added that it has yet to receive a response from the Israeli side via mediators.

“The movement reaffirms its readiness to move forward with a comprehensive deal,” the statement said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office responded swiftly, dismissing the announcement.

“Unfortunately, this is more spin by Hamas that contains nothing new,” the statement read.

Netanyahu reiterated his revised conditions for ending the war, which include the release of all hostages, Hamas’ disarmament, the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip, and continued Israeli security control over the territory.
