Israeli high court rules government is not giving Palestinian prisoners enough food

The Israeli High Court of Justice ruled that the state is not fulfilling its legal obligations to feed Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons and detention centres with enough food and ordered authorities to improve their nutrition.

The ruling came after petitions were filed by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel and Gisha organisations in April last year against National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and the Israel Prison Service.

The groups accused the authorities of reducing food portions of Palestinian prisoners below subsistence level after 7 October 2023, as part of a deliberate policy to starvation.

The Israeli justice minister reacted to the ruling ordering prisoners to be provided with food in the quantity and composition as the other prisoners, saying that the Supreme Court is harming Israel's security.
