Algeria asks UN Security Council to meet after Israel attacks Qatar
Algeria on Tuesday asked the United Nations Security Council to meet after Israel attacked Hamas leaders in Qatar, news agency Reuters has reported.
Algeria requested that the 15-member council meet on Wednesday, diplomats have said.
Israeli air strikes hit Doha, targeting senior Hamas officials who had gathered to discuss the latest US ceasefire proposal for Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out the strikes, saying it targeted Hamas’s senior leadership.
Hamas said that its leadership has survived Israeli air strikes, but five members of its delegation were killed, including the son of senior leader Khalil al-Hayya.
A member of Qatar's security forces was also killed, the country's interior ministry said.
Countries including Pakistan, the UAE and Turkey have condemned the attack carried out by Israel against the Hamas negotiation delegation in the Qatari capital, calling it an act of aggression and a brazen violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE were among the Gulf countries condemning the attack, warning of "grave consequences resulting from the Israeli occupation’s persistence in its criminal transgressions".
