German coalition party blocks aid to Palestine Authority that could 'endanger' Israel

Germany's Conservative Social Union (CSU) has blocked aid to the Palestine Authority in the occupied West Bank over fears it could "endanger" Israel.

The CSU, a member of the governing coalition, said it would temporarily halt 30 million euros ($35 million) pledged by Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) after a trip to the region last month.

Alexander Hoffmann, parliamentary leader of the CSU party, told the Bild newspaper the party wanted further "clarification".

Hoffmann's spokesman confirmed to AFP his comments that "humanitarian help is important, but it must be clear which concrete projects the money will be used for before the funds are approved".

"Projects that endanger Israel's security must be excluded."
