Albanese tells UN Israel must share blame for Gaza crisis
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese invoked the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, as well as journalists and the tens of thousands of civilians, in a speech at the United Nations. His remarks came during a meeting on Monday where dozens of world leaders pressed for recognition of a Palestinian state.
On Sunday, Australia joined Britain and Canada in formally recognising Palestine, aligning with more than three-quarters of UN member states that already do so. The move drew opposition from the United States and Israel.
Albanese reminded the assembly that Australia had been the first UN member to vote for the partition plan 78 years ago that led to Israel’s creation. He said Canberra continues to stand against antisemitism but stressed that “the Israeli Government must accept its share of responsibility” for the crisis in Gaza, where widespread bombardment has killed tens of thousands of civilians.
He added that “aid workers have been killed trying to deliver humanitarian assistance, including Australian Zomi Frankcom”, while journalists had also died “trying to bring the truth to light”.
