Spain blocks passage of US planes and ships carrying arms for Israel

Spanish authorities on Monday prevented the passage of American planes and ships loaded with weapons and ammunition bound for Israel, El Pais newspaper reported.  

Spain blocked the transit of the equipment through the Rota (Cádiz) and Morón de la Frontera (Seville) bases, the report said.

On 25 September, Spain cancelled a major defence deal with Israel for supplying advanced aerial technology for its Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The €207m contract cancellation marked the third defence deal to be terminated by Spain. 

Spain last week approved a law mandating a "total" arms embargo on Israel as part of measures aimed at stopping the genocide in Gaza.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said at a news conference that the decree prohibits all exports to Israel of defence material and dual-use products or technologies, and the import of such equipment to Spain.
