Brazil condemns Israeli interception of Gaza aid flotilla

Brazil has condemned Israel after its navy intercepted a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, which included several Brazilian nationals and a lawmaker.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Brasilia “deplores the Israeli government’s military action, which violates rights and endangers the physical well-being of peaceful protesters”. It added: “The responsibility for the safety of those detained now rests with Israel.”

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said his government had communicated “directly” with Israel over concerns for the 15 Brazilians taking part in the flotilla, including legislator Luizianne Lins.

Brazil is among several countries worldwide urging Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the besieged Gaza Strip.
