South Africa’s president condemns Israel’s illegal flotilla raid
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned Israel for the “abduction” of pro-Palestinian activists seized in international waters, demanding their “immediate release”. Among them is Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, who joined the Gaza aid flotilla to challenge Israel’s siege.
At least six South Africans were on board the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of some 45 ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the UN says famine has already taken hold.
“The interception of the flotilla in international waters is contrary to international law and violates the sovereignty of every nation whose flag was flown,” Ramaphosa said. He accused Israel of trampling international law to enforce its blockade.
