Middle East Eye Fellowship

MEE Fellowship

Middle East Eye launches inaugural Fellowship

Middle East Eye is excited to launch our first-ever Fellowship programme, designed to support in-depth reporting by freelance journalists across the region. Each year, the MEE Fellowship will focus on a theme of critical importance to the region, with applicants invited to submit detailed story pitches on this topic.

This year’s theme

Water shortages in the Middle East: Within the next 25 years, every country in the region will be in a state of extreme water stress, amid rising temperatures, enduring conflicts, and widespread resource mismanagement. Growing water insecurity risks fuelling new wars, spurring waves of migration, and upending vulnerable communities across the Middle East.

How to apply

Send a story pitch on this year’s theme, along with all required application materials, via the “apply now” button below. Applications are open until 1 November 2025, and all will receive a response by the end of the year.

Who is eligible to apply

All freelance journalists based in the Middle East who have a deep understanding of the region, and who are committed to bringing local perspectives to the fore, are invited to apply. Whether you are just starting out in the field or have years of experience, we would love to hear from you. This opportunity is not open to staff or contract employees of any media outlet.

What the Fellowship covers

If selected, you’ll receive a $1,000 stipend, alongside institutional support and guidance from MEE’s award-winning team. You will work on your project under the supervision of our Fellowships Director, who will coordinate the in-house production of related visual and sidebar elements to help tell the story more comprehensively.

Expected time commitment

The Fellowship runs from January to June 2026. You will need to be available for monthly check-ins to provide progress updates on your reporting, and to flag any potential obstacles. A final draft will be expected by June 2026.
