Guterres urges action, lasting ceasefire on Gaza war’s second anniversary
On the second anniversary of the Gaza war, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres renewed his call, “with even greater urgency”, for an end to hostilities and a permanent ceasefire.
“Two years ago today, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched an abhorrent large-scale terror attack on Israel,” he said.
“On this day, let us remember all those who were killed and suffered horrific violence.”
He also called for the unconditional and immediate release of the captives.
Guterres said that US President Donald Trump's Gaza plan is an “opportunity that must be seized to bring this tragic conflict to an end”.
“This is a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defies comprehension. Put an end to the hostilities in Gaza, Israel & the region now. Stop making civilians pay with their lives & their futures,” he said.
