New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani swept four of the city’s five boroughs and won over key communities that many analysts said could have been sceptical of voting for the city’s first Muslim mayor, according to election results.

Mamdani beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by 10 percentage points in the borough of Manhattan, 20 points in Brooklyn, 11 points in the Bronx, and five points in Queens.

Staten Island was the only borough that Cuomo carried. US President Donald Trump won the predominantly white, middle-class borough in the 2024 elections.

Cuomo ran as an Independent after losing the primary election in June. He highlighted his Italian-American family’s decades-old role in the state’s Democratic Party. Cuomo, who is Catholic, pitched himself to Black and Latino voters as a “law and order candidate”.

But there was a clear generational gap in support for Mamdani, 34, and Cuomo, aged 67. Mamdani won a whopping 78 percent of voters aged 18-29, with Cuomo bagging just 18 percent of that age group. Women in that group were even more lopsidedly distributed, with 84 percent of women in that age bracket favouring Mamdani.

Overall, Mamdani took the 18-44 age group by 70 percent to Cuomo's 25 percent, while Cuomo was favoured among the over 45 and older age group by 51 percent to Mamdani's 40 percent.

However, election results show that Mamdani massively won over key constituents that Cuomo had hoped to carry, and had already won over in the primary.

Mamdani beat Cuomo 61 percent to 35 percent among New York City’s Black community, and won 57 percent to 37 percent among mostly Hispanic residents, according to precinct-level results. Mamdani also beat Cuomo with mostly Asian residents, winning the group over by 47 percent to 43 percent.

Cuomo carried the city’s mostly white residents with 52 percent against 38 percent for Mamdani.

Over one million votes

Mamdani’s ability to create a broad coalition that included Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and a strong number of white voters helped him garner over one million votes. The last mayoral candidate to do so was John V Lindsay in 1969.

Mamdani also won handily among the "other racial/ethnic" groups, with 51 percent to Cuomo's 39.

Along religious lines, Cuomo beat out Mamdani with "Protestants/Other Christians", Catholics and Jews with 48, 52, and 64 percent, respectively. But Mamdani won handily among the "Other Religious Affiliation" and "No Religious Affiliation" with 71 and 76 percent, respectively.

Mamdani’s success is underscored in the neighbourhoods he was able to win over after the primary through increased outreach. For example, Mamdani’s 11-point victory in the Bronx, which has large numbers of Black and Hispanic voters, came after losing the district to Cuomo by 18 points in the June 2025 primary.

Likewise, Mamdani thrashed Cuomo in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighbourhood, one of the city’s most economically deprived areas, winning by 18 points. Cuomo won the neighbourhood by 40 points in the primary.

Cuomo tried to paint Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, as an enemy of the city’s well-heeled. Cuomo won traditional “old-money” bastions of New York City, such as the Upper East Side and Tribeca, which is home to some of the city’s most high-net-worth individuals. He also won in Midtown Manhattan.

However, Mamdani performed well in other neighbourhoods of Manhattan that are known to be well-off.

Mamdani beat Cuomo by 10 points in the West Village, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets and trendy restaurant scene. Likewise, he carried Chelsea and Greenwich Village. The Upper West Side, a longtime rival to the Upper East Side, also went to Mamdani.
