The Israeli foreign minister calls on Jews to settle in Israel

Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar called on Jews from Western countries to move to Israel following last week’s deadly shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia.

"Today, I call upon the Jews of England, the Jews of France, the Jews of Australia, the Jews of Canada, the Jews of Belgium: come to the Land of Israel! Come home!" he said.

According to Israel's 1950 "Law of Return," every Jew in the world can make aliyah and obtain Israeli citizenship. The law also applies to people with at least one Jewish grandparent. 

Those who complete the Aliyah process are required to sign up for military service.

The minister’s call comes as Israel’s military chief said the army does not have enough combat soldiers and is seeking to recruit ultra-Orthodox Jews.
